Wanted art to be more substantial, not dedicated wholly to capturing fleeting moments Split PI into 2- like Neo and Rom from earlier Seurat and Cezanne more scientific design, formal (dots/ color planes) Gauguin, van Gogh and Lautrec- emphasis on emotions through color and light Cubism and Surrealism grew out of these movements
