MMW 12 January 13, 2015 Agenda

Sequence of Class Mindful Minute / Attendance / Administrative P.A.C.E.S. Charting System for Deconstructing Texts – Burton Mack’s text Groups: Finding Mack’s claims Looking forward

QUIZ! Please take out a blank, half-sheet of paper (tear and share with classmates in order to save paper). -Write your first and last name in the top right corner, your section number (A13 or A14) beneath -Number the paper 1 to 5 vertically

Question 1 Of the three gospels Professor Cohen has assigned us to read (Mark, Matthew, and John), which is the only one that does not detail an active account of Jesus? (In other words, it talks about him, but it does not narrate his miracles, mission, or teachings – at least in the reading we did.)

Question 2 From Daniel: Of the four beasts in his dream, which one scared him the most? (Just provide the number)

Question 3 Give one physical characteristic of this monster, based on Daniel’s description.

Question 4 In “Acts of the Apostles,” who steps up as the new leader of the Apostles, now that Jesus has died?

Question 5 Who does Matthias replace among the Apostles?

Switch with someone near you Time to grade them.

Answers 1)John is the only reading in which Jesus is not “narrated” actively. 2)The fourth beast (#4) frightens Daniel most. 3)Iron teeth, horns, or human eyes/mouth on a horn are the three main descriptors of the monster. 4)Paul is the new leader of the Apostles. 5)Matthias replaces Judas among the Apostles because of the whole, you know, betrayal thing.

Burton Mack, “On redescribing Christian origins” A difficult read. Do not feel overwhelmed. This is what section is for: to discuss texts and to help you come to a better understanding of them. First thought: what did you think of the article? - Discuss with a neighbor for 90 seconds. Be ready to respond if called on.

Purpose / Argument All academic texts – including the ones you will be writing as your papers! – are written for a purpose and contain an overarching argument. It’s important to be able to discern these, or else the entire reading becomes confusing.

P.A.C.E.S. Charting a text with PACES. P – Project (Purpose) A – Argument (Thesis) C – Claims E – Evidence S – Strategies (or, results)

Looking Forward For Friday, in addition to completing the assigned readings, revise your Argument Analysis Worksheet answers according to new discoveries made in class today. Type them up and bring them to class. We will work with the A.A.W. at the beginning on Friday. We will also discuss how to structure a paper such as this – including how to write a proper academic thesis for this type of project.
