ATP and Photosynthesis Whiteboard Review Chapter 8 Material

1. What are the 3 components that make up an ATP molecule? Adenine, Ribose (sugar), and Phosphate groups

2. What is different between ADP and ATP? Which molecule holds energy? ADP has 2 phosphate groups, ATP has 3. ATP holds energy.

3. In what organelle is ATP created in both plants and animals alike? Mitochondria.

4. Explain how energy is released by ATP. What happens to release energy and change back into ADP? The last (3) phosphate group bond is broken and releases energy. From 3 phosphates groups to 2 phosphate groups.

5. What is the overall reaction (formula) for photosynthesis? Light + 6 CO2 + 6 H2O  6 O2 + Sugar/Carb (C6H12O6)

6. Where does the energy for photosynthesis come from? The sun.

7. What plant pigments are involved in photosynthesis? Chlorophyll (a and b)

8. In what organelle of a plant cell does photosynthesis take place? Chloroplast

9. What is a photosynthesis waste product? Oxygen gas (O2).

10. Does photosynthesis require a different type of energy than sunlight to occur? What other type of energy is needed? Yes. ATP is needed for the Calvin cycle (light-independent reaction) to occur.

11. What organisms undergo photosynthesis? Autotrophs.
