Transitional Phrases What is a transitional phrase? A transitional word or phrase signals to the reader that there is going to be a shift in ideas/discussion, but that it still applies to the topic as a whole.

Why do we need them? Without transitional phrases, there is no glue to bind ideas together! Transitional phrases help the reader follow the movement in the discussion.

Where do I put a transitional phrase or word? Transitional words/phrases generally occur at the beginning of a sentence. Example: Every time I eat a bag of potato chips in one sitting, I feel guilty. Nevertheless, I continue to do it anyway.
