2 *NOTES --- Write these down in your notebook, # 2* B.C. (before Christ) refers to the time period before Christ was born. It is also known as B.C.E. (Before the Common Era), because some historians want the timeline to work for all religions, not just Christians. A.D. (from the Latin words Anno Domini-meaning “in the year of our Lord”) refers to the years from the birth of Christ up to the present. Instead of A.D, many writers and historians now use C.E., meaning the “Common Era”. How should present time (January 6, 2016) be identified? B.C. or A.D.? BCE or CE?

6 How to convert a year to a century  There is / was no zero year. The dating system goes from 1 BCE to 1 CE  So the FIRST century that “the Lord” (anno domini) was alive was from was from 1 CE to 100 CE The 2nd century was from 101 CE to 200 CE The 20th century was from 1901 CE to 2000 CE  In 2001 CE, we entered the 21 st century  SAME THING GOING BACKWARDS (BC/BCE): Years 1 to 100 BC were the 1st century B.C. Years 101 to 200 BC were the 2 nd century BC
