READING TIMELINES Understanding History
2
Measuring Time How many people do you know who are more than 80 years old? More than 90? More than 100? Imagine what Ohio might have looked like 100 years ago: no iPhones, no internet, no computers, no TVs, no refrigerators, no antibiotics, no freeways. The world has changed a lot in the last 100 years.
3
Periods of History Earth is 4.5 billion years old! The first humans lived nearly two million years ago. To understand history, historians divide time into periods of different lengths.
4
Era and Millennium Era is general term for a period of time Millennium is a period of 1,000 years What millennium do we live in?
5
Centuries & Decades Centuries = 100 years Decades = 10 years 19501960197019801990200020102020 16001700180019002000
6
Periods of History What century do we live in? What decade do we live in? What is a century after 1874? What is a decade after 1960?
7
Year vs. Century People name centuries to describe 100 year time periods 1 st Century = year 1-199 2 nd Century = year 100-199 3 rd Century = year _____ - ______ 7 th century = year 1600-1699 ___th century = year 1700-1799 20 th century = year ______ - _______ HINT! Add 1 to the hundreds place to get the century!
8
Timelines Human timeline What did it teach you? What did you lean? Timelines help show the order of events and relationships between events.
9
Which way do you read? Do you read from the top of the page or the bottom? Do you read from left to right of the page or right to left?
10
We read timelines the same way and in the same directions that we read a book We read this time line from LEFT to RIGHT Earliest dates are on the LEFT We read this time line from Top to Bottom Earliest dates are on the TOP
11
PRACTICE! What is this timeline about? When was Lebron named to the all- defensive team? What happened first: was Lebron the youngest person to score 10,000 points or was he elected his 2 nd straight all star appearance? What happened first: was Lebron a free agent or the #1 overall draft pick? 1984- Lebron James is born in Akron Ohio. 2003- Lebron is the 1 overall NBA draft pick 2005- Lebron was elected to his 2 nd straight all star appearance 2007- James became the youngest person to score 10,000 2009- Lebron was named to the NBA all- defensive team 2010- Lebron became a free agent.
12
Make a timeline Put the following decades on a time line 1930 1940 1950 1960 1970 1980 1990 2000
13
1937-1938: The Memphis Tigers lost all 14 games in their season 1956-1957: the Season tickets cost $10 for 10 games 1993: Memphis showed a women’s basketball game on the TV for the first time. 1994: Memphis State University becomes the University of Memphis. Make a timeline: Add these dates
14
Make a timeline Give the timeline a title What century is the timeline showing?
15
Practice Figure out the year or century: 1899 AD 13th century 1500 AD 76 BC 10th century
16
Moving on: Terms to know Chronological BC BCE AD CE
17
What year is it now???? 5769 1430 2012 All of the above BUT HOW COULD THAT BE?
18
What year is it now??? The year it is depends on the calendar you use! It is the year 5769 according to the Hebrew calendar. It is the year 1430 according to the Islamic calendar. It is the year 2009 according to the Gregorian calendar.
19
What about all the history that happened before Jesus was born?? For dates and events before Jesus was born, or before “the common era”, write the letters BCE and BC after the year. BCE means Before the Common Era. BC means Before Christ. BCE and BC mean the same thing.
20
And after…? For dates and events after Jesus was born, or after “the common era”, write the letters CE or AD after the year. CE means the Common Era. AD means Anno Domini, or “The Year of Our Lord” AD does NOT mean “After Death” because the common era starts when Jesus was born, not when he died. CE and AD mean the same thing.
21
Time Dating BCE, BC, CE, AD, are called “time designations” because they designate, or specify, whether a year is before the year 1 CE, or after.
22
Use the word box and fill in the blanks on your sheet of paper: 1.When I refer to the years after Jesus was born, I label the year with ___________ at the end of the number. 2._____________ means before Christ.2._____________ means before Christ. 3.BC is the exact same thing as ______________.3.BC is the exact same thing as ______________. 4.A _______________ is a 100 year time period4.A _______________ is a 100 year time period 5.The time period from 1990-2000 is a __________. 6.The word that means the same as AD is _____.6.The word that means the same as AD is _____. 7.AD is an abbreviation for ______________.7.AD is an abbreviation for ______________. 1) 2000 AD 2000 BCE 2000 BC 2) 18 BCE 18 AD 18 BC 3) 500 BC 500AD 500CE 4) 1900 CE 1900 AD 1900 BCE
25
5) 40 AD 3000 BC 6) 20 CE 1000 BCE 7) 1 BCE 2001 CE 8) 530 AD 400 BCE
26
BCE Timelines For events that happened before Jesus was born, larger numbers happened first. Why? Because they happened MORE years before Jesus was born.
27
Large Small Large 1 1329 BC 900 BC 250 BC 250 AD 900 AD 1329 AD QUICK: Would the timeline change if I changed BC to BCE?
28
You TRY! Larg e Use these numbers: QUICK: would anything change if I changed AD to CE? Large Small Large 1 2010 AD 1200 BC 1452 AD 1662 AD 1321 BC 500 BC
29
One more time! Use these numbers: You TRY! 1 1521 BC 1776 AD 1052 CE 987 BCE 2005 AD 120 0 BC
