10 Bao Dai Emperor of Vietnam returns in 1949 and heads France puppet state By 1950, Soviets & Chinese begin to aid Ho Chi Minh while the U.S. offers aid to the French

11 Dien Bien Phu French base by Laos to stop supplies In a valley, French surrounded by over 40,000 Vietminh March 13-May 7, 1954 57 day siege French led by General Navarre vs. Viet Minh led by Giap Approx. 50,000 Viet Minh surround 13,000 French French defeated *** Turning Point U.S. involvement
