2 What is Identity Theft? Identity theft is when somebody uses your personal identity to commit crimes and fraud. They will sometimes use your social security number, credit cards, and your name.

3 Statistics Identity Theft is up eighty percent from last year. 7 million or 3.4 percent of U.S. consumers were identity theft victims in the past 12 months. 8.3 million people were affected by identity theft in 2005. 3.7 percent of people interviewed said that they discovered they were victims of identity theft. In more than 50 percent of the identity theft in 2005 the victims did not have to pay any out-of- pocket expenses.

4 Who is the Federal Trade Commission? They are the nation’s consumer protection agency.

5 Deter, Detect, and Defend Deter is making it difficult for a thief to steal your identity. Detect is monitoring your accounts and bank statements each month, and also check your credit report periodically. Defend is taking steps and knowing what to do when you get your identity stolen.

6 Signs of being a victim Look for accounts you didn’t open and credit cards you didn’t apply for. Look for bills to receive and other mail you usually get. Look for being denied credit and people calling about debts in your account.

7 Identity Theft Tips Be careful with your social security card. Watch your accounts. Pay attention to debts and things like that.
