Kimberly Smith Proposal Presentation

PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to show if the Kodaly method of teaching is an effective way of teaching musical concepts to a culturally diverse class. At my school I have noticed that there is not a significant amount of culturally responsive teaching happening in the classroom. Can I make a difference?

Research Questions Is Kodaly a better method of teaching musical concepts? Can Kodaly be combined with culturally responsive teaching? Will there be a significant increase in the learning for Bilingual students with the Kodaly method? Will there be a significant difference between the learning of bilingual and non-bilingual students with the Kodaly method?

Thesis Using Kodaly in a culturally responsive way will have significant increase in the learning of bilingual and non-bilingual students.

Kodaly Kodaly- A method of teaching musical concepts where the voice is the most important instrument and folk music is used as the music base. Kodaly incorporates games, musical play, and hand signals to name a few methods of teaching. The Kodaly philosophy says that music is for all children and should be enjoyable for them.

Culturally Responsive Teaching Culturally responsive teaching is a method of teaching that embraces diversity and multiculturalism. It is a method that must include the student’s culture to make a connection to what you are teaching. The teacher must understand the demographics and culture(s) of their class.

Participants The participants are approximately 150 second graders. The location is a south suburb of Chicago with low to middle income. The student population is 45%- Latino, 55% African-American, and 5% Caucasian, Arab, and Asian combined.

Methodology Musical Concept – beat and rhythm Pretest- a simple rhythm using ta and ti-ti Treatment will be for 2 quarters Post-test- perform a song to show beat and rhythm. Scale for pre and post test is 10 points.

Analysis I will be comparing pre-test to post-test. I will be comparing bilingual to non-bilingual. Tests are on a ten-point scale 2-way ANOVA

Conclusion I hope to improve as a teacher through this research and become a contagious, culturally responsive educator.
