3 Proper Definition: -noun, aggressive and heavily amplified rock music, commonly performed by groups that wear spectacular or bizarre costumes. HEAVY METAL MUSIC

4 Personal Definition: Genre of music that evolved from rock and electric blues into a much louder and more aggressive sound Bands always consists of drummers, guitarists, singers, and bass players but specific songs often include other instruments like electric organs, keyboards, even orchestral instruments Guitar players generally use heavily distorted riffs, melodic solos, and chugs Drummers utilize rolls, triplets, and in most cases double bass drum The tempo is usually fast, and most harmonies are dissonant The lyrics generally have deeper meaning Often the lead singers voice is either very high, or gravelly, and in many genres singers scream the entirety of their lyrics There are 14 main sub genres

7 THE 80’S Thrash metal Combining New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the speed of hardcore punk Began during the early 80’s Radio-play failed, but popularity increased These fuelled many more sub-genres, such as death metal and black metal

8 Glam Metal A new type of metal emerged in the 80’s that was popularized by MTV Extravagant costumes worn by band members Characterized by clean vocals, hard drumming, simple guitar riffs

9 1990’s Metal was in a sort of hiatus Grunge and a new subgenre called Nu Metal dominated the scene Metalcore developed as an underground scene that combined hardcore punk and thrash metal

10 2000’s Metalcore stormed the metal stage and became a commercial success This genre focuses on memorable melodies (motifs), crescendos/decrescendos, dramatic flair, and can include screaming or non- screaming vocals
