1 The Language of Anatomy Medical Terminology – Each term as a basic structure on which to build=the root. Ex: cardi meaning pertaining to the heart – Root is combined with prefix or suffix that can change its meaning. Ex: ology means study of. So cardiology is the study of the heart.

2 Language of Anatomy – Often you will be given a combining form, which is the word root and a connecting vowel (usually “o”), to make it easier to pronounce and combine with possible suffixes. – As a general rule, if a suffix begins with a vowel, drop the combining form. Ex: gastro combined with the term for inflammation it is becomes gastritis (no “o”)
