2. DESCRIPTION
A drug derived from opium or compounds similar to opium. Such drugs are potent pain relievers and can affect mood and behavior. Long-term use of narcotics can lead to dependence and tolerance. Also known as a narcotic analgesic.
Narcotics include opium, morphine, codeine, heroin, hydromorphone, meperidine, and methadone. Heroin is most often abused, but others, including cough syrups that contain codeine are also used irresponsibly.

3. HOW IT ENTERS THE BODY
Narcotics can be taken as an injection, inhaled, snorted, swallowed in a pill, or smoked

5. EFFECTS They work on the central nervous system to dull the senses
They can cause sedation, slurred speech, depressed respiration, nausea, sleepiness, constipation, reduced pain or the inability to feel pain
The user feels a sense of euphoria for minutes and can experience hallucinations or psychosis
Physiological effects include reduced anxiety, reduced tension, and happiness but these effects don’t last and become weakened as the user becomes more tolerant

7. Medical Uses
Narcotics can be used as pain medication, with a director’s care. They block the pain receptors in the brain, which reduces the pain. Narcotics are also used as a sleep inducing pill because of its ability to dull the senses and cause sleepiness.
