Carbohydrates are the main source of energy, comes from plants and some in milk. 3 types are sugars, starches and fiber. Plants make all of these. Photosynthesis – the chemical process that makes carbs. Using the sun’s energy, plants convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and the sugar glucose. The green pigment - chlorophyll must be in the plant for Photosynthesis to occur.
3
Monosaccharides (having a single unit chemical structure) Glucose – exists naturally in fruits and vegetables, used to sweeten food products, also in known as blood sugar Fructose - found in fruits, veggies, highly sweet Galactose – not sweet, found in milk, helps create milk sugar (lactose) Quick energy source Doesn’t supply any other nutrients
4
Sucrose –(glucose + fructose) found in fruits, sugar cane, and sugar beets Lactose –( glucose + galactose) found only in milk and milk products Maltose –(glucose + glucose) forms when starch is digested, grains Disaccharide – two monosaccharides joined together, two unit structure always including glucose
