May 1942 American and Australian forces stopped a Japanese fleet from reaching Australia after a five day battle.

June 3, 1943 American Admiral Chester Nimitz defended the island from a Japanese fleet. American torpedo planes and dive bombers attacked Japanese carriers. The Japanese fleet lost four aircraft carriers, a cruiser, and 250 planes.
