Math Practice 8 Look for and Express Regularity in Repeated Reasoning

Math Practice 8 Look for and Express Regularity in Repeated Reasoning Cluster:4.MD - Represent and interpret data. Standard:4. Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.

HIGHLIGHTED PROBLEM Helena began collecting stamps in third grade. She measured each stamp in her collection and displayed them in the table below: Helena wants to analyze and interpret the data collected. How can she best display the given set of data?

She begins by listing the data from least to greatest…

Make a line plot to display a data set of measurement in fractions…

If all the stamps measuring 8/8 were connected end to end, they would measure exactly 5 inches in all. Use the line plot in order to answer questions about the data. Which set of stamps would measure exactly 5 inches when connected end to end?

Use the given data set to explore a general method for multiplying a fraction by a whole number! 1/8 +1/8 = 2/8 1/8 X 2 = 2/8 2/8+2/8+2/8 = 6/8 2/8 X 3= 6/8 3/8+3/8+3/8+3/8+3/8+3/8 = 18/8 or 2 2/8 6 X 3/8 = 18/8 or 2 2/8 5/8+5/8+5/8+5/8 = 16/8 or 2 5/8 X 4= 16/8 or 2 6/8+6/8 = 12/8 or 1 4/8 2 X 6/8 = 12/8 or 1 4/8 7/8+7/8+7/8+7/8+7/8 = 35/8 or 4 3/8 5 X 7/8 = 35/8 or 4 3/8 8/8+8/8+8/8+8/8+8/8 = 40/8 or 5 5 X 8/8 = 40/8 or 5 1 X 4/8 = 4/8

The above fraction bars represent 2 wholes. Each whole is separated into 8 equal parts. 1/8 of 2 or 1/8 X 2 is equal to 2/8 1/8 X 2 = 2/8 For Example… In essence we are finding 1/8 of 2.

The above fraction bars represent 2 wholes. Each whole is separated into 8 equal parts. 1/8 of 2 or 1/8 X 2 is equal to 2/8 1/8 X 2 = 2/8 CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING... In essence we are finding 1/8 of 2.
