String Pitch vs. Tension, Length, and Diameter

The Pitch If you are given a guitar, you will be able to calculate the pitch if you know the tension compared to the length and the diameter of a string. But that’s impossible to do without a computer, so I have found this link where you can do that. http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/wikla/mus/NewS calc/

Length vs. Pitch We can take another guitar (just using a guitar as an example) and on any string, go to the fret that is the halfway point of the string, the pitch will be an octave higher than it was when you weren’t pressing down on the halfway fret. For example, if one string is 440 hertz, when you press down on that fret, the pitch will change to 880 hertz (an octave higher). If you go halfway between the halfway point and the end of the string (3/4), you will get two octaves above the starting note. The pitch, if the string is 440 hertz, will end up as 1320 hertz. But if you halfway to the halfway point (1/4), you will get the pitch of halfway between the starting note, and the octave above it.

The fundamental and overtones, when sounded together, are perceived by the listener as a single tone.” -Wikipedia So the string is vibrating between the nodal points, and the whole string is also, and lots of notes are being sounded, it just sounds like one note.

When sounded, the string cannot vibrate at its original, fundamental tone, it is forced to correspond to the nodal point, resulting in a high chime.
