Warm Up: Simplify the expression 1. 2. 3.

Simplify

Dominos Get a worksheet from the front: Cut out the dominoes, connect them in order, problem simplified form

AUGUST 28 TH, 2014 Exponent Laws Fractions

Adding/Subtracting/Multiplying Fractions Do you remember how to combine fractions?

Apply combining fractions to exponent rules When multiplying two variables with a like base, you ADD the exponents x 1/5 x 2/5 = x 5/3 x 1/3 = When dividing two variables with a like base, you SUBTRACT the exponents

Exponent Rules When you raise an exponent to another exponent, you MULTIPLY the exponents. (y 2 ) 5/6 = (x 4 ) -2/8 =

1. 2. When a fraction is in parentheses with a negative exponent, DISTRIBUTE the exponent to both top and bottom and SWITCH your terms. How about fractions!

Type in your calculator (4) 1/2 =___. Type in your calculator (9) 1/2 =____. Type in your calculator (16) 1/2 =___. Type in your calculator (25) 1/2 =____.

Do you notice a pattern? So we can say that any time you see a 1/2 exponent, the expression is equivalent to taking the square root. Ex:

Type in your calculator (1) 1/3 =___. Type in your calculator (8) 1/3 =____. Type in your calculator (64) 1/3 =___. Type in your calculator (125) 1/3 =____.

Do you notice a pattern? So we can say that any time you see a 1/3 exponent, the expression is equivalent to taking the cube root. Ex:

Exponents Type in to your calculator 8 2/3 = ________. What is 8 2 ? What is 64 1/3? So 8 2/3 means to square 8, then take the square root!

Simplify 1. 2. 3. 4.
