1
Feed Costs Cost per unit of nutrient supplied Usually protein or energy Most feeds are priced $ per ton (If $ per bushel, need lb/bu) – Corn = 56 lb/bu – Barley = 48 lb/bu – Oats = 32 lb/bu
2
Feed Costs Be sure to use DM/as-fed conversions depending on the feed composition values Prices are always on as-fed weights
3
Feed Costs Example: 20% CP cubes (DM basis) $170/ton, 90% DM
4
Feed Costs Determine total lb of nutrient in a ton 2,000 lb x 0.90 = 1,800 lb DM 1,800 lb DM x 0.20 = 360 lb CP in ton Determine cost per lb of nutrient ($170/ton)/360 lb CP = $0.47/lb CP
5
Feed Costs Example: 18% CP alfalfa (DM basis) $90/ton, 88% DM 2,000 lb x 0.88 = 1,760 lb DM 1,760 lb DM x 0.18 = 316.8 lb CP in ton ($90/ton)/316.8 lb CP = $0.28/lb CP
6
Feed Costs Example: 30% CP liquid supplement (as-fed) $200/ton 2,000 lb x 0.30 = 600 lb CP in ton ($200/ton)/600 lb CP = $0.33/lb CP
