2
P RIOR K NOWLEDGE A basic number sense Greater than and less than Basic counting skills
3
M AIN I DEA Statistics are a four step process which include… Formulating questions Collecting data Analyzing data Interpreting the results Different types of graphs and data can be represented best when you use the correct graph Measures that describe data with numbers are called statistics
4
G RAPH ’ S REPRESENT How the data on the graphs is organized should be directly related to the original question asked You should always involve students in deciding how to represent the data so it makes sense to them The goal of a graph is to… See that graphs and charts can tell us information Different types of representations can tell different information about the same data Once a representation is created, it is important to discuss what it tells people
5
P ICTOGRAPHS Used in lower grade levels where pictures represent the object being counted
6
B AR GRAPHS Used in early grades; when used young should be made with items that can be counted
7
T ALLY CHARTS Can also be used in the early Grades; tallies are the items that the Younger students can count
8
C IRCLE GRAPHS You would not use this in the lower grades because percentages are not appropriate for lower grades Total circle equals whole number of objects, in our graph it is the total number of teenagers When students get into the higher grades they can figure out percents shown on our graph above
9
L INE PLOTS
10
S TEM - AND - L EAF PLOTS For example there are 17 students in the class and this is the data that represents how many cookies they’ve ate in their life. The scores here are 22, 26, 27 31, 33, 35 42, 44, 46 57, 58, 59 61, 63, 64, 65, 67
11
H ISTOGRAMS This graph may look like a bar graph because they both use bars to represent a range of numbers For example: between 1-3 students scored 0-20 on the final exam, 10 students Scored somewhere between 20-40, and so on
12
L INE G RAPHS This type of graph represents numeric values with points along a number scale This graph shows the amount of miles Amanda traveled from one hour to the next. Then you connect the dots to better understand the data
13
S CATTER P LOTS This is data that is represented by a point on a coordinate grid Then you put a line that hits as many dots as you can. lines can slope up, down, or show a slight curve
14
I NTERPRETING THE R ESULTS Key Points: Context of the situation What does the data mean in a graph? Misrepresented data
15
M EASURING THE C ENTER An average is a quantity, rating, or the like that represents or approximates an arithmetic mean There are different types of averages that you can gather by collecting data… A mean is when you add up all the numbers in the set and divide by the cardinal number A mode is the value that occurs most frequently in a set The median is the middle value in an ordered set
