1. How did the geography of Greece affect its development? Greece has many geographic factors (such as mountains, seas, peninsula, and archipelago). The mountains affected Greece’s development by creating many separate city-states.
15
2. How were Athens and Sparta different (and explain why they were rivals)? Athens and Sparta were different in many ways. One way that they were different was that Athens had a direct Democracy and their society was based on education. Sparta had a Totalitarian government and their society was based on the military/war.
16
3. Explain the significance of each of the following – Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Alexander the Great. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were all great Greek philosophers. Socrates taught Plato, Plato taught Aristotle and Aristotle taught Alexander the Great. Alexander the Great would then become a great conqueror and created the Hellenistic culture.
17
4. Why was Rome able to grow into such a large/powerful empire? Rome was able to grow into a large/powerful empire for many reasons. The main reason was Rome’s geography. Rome was centrally located on the Italian peninsula, which had access to the Mediterranean Sea. This allowed trade, travel, and cultural diffusion to occur. This will be the same exact answer in April to the question, “Why did the Renaissance begin in Italy?”
18
5. How did the Romans contribute to our society? The Romans created many great things that we still see and use in our society. A few examples include government (Republic), law (the Twelve Tables), and art/architecture.
19
6. Why are the Romans referred to as “imitators” of the Greeks? The Romans are sometimes referred to as “imitators” of the Greeks because their society was heavily influenced by Greek art, architecture, and government. Rome borrowed Greece’s polytheistic religious beliefs but changed the names of the gods.
20
7. How did the Romans influence our system of government? Roman law (the Twelve Tables) influenced the American system of government by giving more rights to the accused. Some examples of this are: “innocent until proven guilty”, “right to a trial by jury”, “right to know your accuser”, etc.

8. Explain the similarities between The Maurya and Gupta Empires in India: The Maurya and Gupta Empires were similar in that they both: had a strong/organized government, united India, and experienced “golden ages”.
22
9. Explain the differences between The Maurya and Gupta Empires in India: The Maurya and Gupta Empire were different because: the Mauryan’s ruled more harshly than the Guptas and they collected taxes. The Gupta Empire created the concept of zero and Sanskrit language. The Maurya Empire controlled most of northern and southern India while the Gupta Empire only controlled most of northern India.
23
10. Explain two major advancements from the Gupta Empire in India: Although there were many major advancements from the Gupta Empire, two of them were the concept of zero and Sanskrit language. The concept of zero was important because it was the beginning of the number system that we use today. Sanskrit language was important because it was an advancement from India’s previous pictogram language.
