Irony The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of what is intended Key word: intended, intention; opposite Ex: In the play, Twelve Angry Men, Juror #3 ironically shouts that he is going to kill Juror 8. This is ironic because his intention was to prove the defendant guilty. However, the opposite occurred as he shouted the same words as the defendant and ended up showing how the defendant may not have meant what he said.

Paragraph Format Topic Sentence – Introduce Caesar’s death and the idea of irony Provide Example – provide reasons why Caesar’s death can be considered ironic. Support your reasons with evidence from the play Explain Example – make sure to fully explain what each example exactly shows. Be sure to emphasize how irony is involved. What was the expectation, and how did the opposite occur? Connect Example to Topic – provide a concluding statement making clear how Caesar’s death was, in fact, ironic.
