Information v Contact the formatist early. Be sure to get on a list. v Discuss programs used: Word, WordPerfect, Excel, etc., and/or hand written materials. v Determine how the formatist prefers to receive materials: e-mail, disk, or CD. v Discuss job costs and payment procedures.

Information v Margins - 1.5” left and 1” top, right, bottom v Page numbers – decide on location – bottom for header pages, top for other pages or all at the top right corner or centered at the bottom v Figures – can use original and tape in v Tables – sideways verses top and bottom v Appendix items – reduce and use originals v IRB form – copy of signed approval page only v Abstract – limited to 350 words on 1 page v Title and Signature Page – align exactly with each other

v Don’t use bold face type. v Don’t use right justification. Ragged edges are best. v Font size is important. It helps determine how many words are on each page. v Be consistent. Always do the exact same thing each time. v Decide if tables should be numbered in roman or arabic numerals. Information

v Remember that the final proof is the writer’s responsibility. The formatist is neither an editor nor a proof reader. v Don’t type the table of contents or the list of tables. It is better to let the typist do this so that the contents match the text exactly.

Number of Copies v Four (4) to the Graduate College on thesis bond paper v Each copy in an envelope with title of study, your name and social security number v Soft or hard bound for self and for committee members

Cost v $10 per thesis v 15 per dissertation v $55 microfilm fee for doctoral students only v $30/$35 for personal hard bound copies
