Write a letter to a TV company persuading them that they should produce more interesting programmes for teenagers. Dear Sir or Madam, I believe that television companies like yours need to be showing more high quality programmes for teenagers. There are many reasons that this would be beneficial, and I would like to outline these reasons for you. The first reason is that the programmes currently aimed at teenagers seem to be full of bad influences, such as sexualisation, violence, gang culture and sexism. For example, ‘The X Factor’ is full of female dancers in revealing clothing, which gives a negative message to our young people: that attractiveness is what matters the most. Programmes such as ‘Ex on the Beach’ promote a sexualised culture to our young people. Recent studies have shown that 86% of young people aged between fourteen and eighteen are worried about impressing their friends by being sexually active: programmes such as these are definitely the cause for such shocking statistics. And can we really be surprised that youth crime is up by 10% when films such as ‘Boyhood’ glamorise gang culture? This is like a red flag to a bull. You need to stop this awful process by giving young people positive role models in television programmes. I think it’s disgusting. This is needed now. Not next month, not next year. The best way to inspire our young people is by showing them talented, hard-working, strong young role models. Not the foolish, negative, disappointing celebrities that currently receive all the attention. Yours faithfully, Faye Milton
