PURPOSE CLAUSES “ut/ne” + subjunctive verb 2 Clauses: Main clause + dependent clause ( indicative verb) (subjunctive verb) 3 Types of Subjunctive Clauses: “cum” clause; indirect question; purpose clauses 2 Tenses of the Subjunctive so far: Imperfect and Pluperfect TRANSLATIONS “ut” + imperfect subjunctive = “in order that;” “so that the subject MIGHT verb”*** “ne + imperfect subjunctive = “in order that…not;” “so that the subject MIGHT NOT verb”*** Purpose Clauses are ONLY USED WITH IMPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE (and Present but we don’t know that yet!) ***IF the subject of the main clause AND the subject of the subjunctive clause are the SAME, translate “ut” as “to” and “ne” as “to not”

Relative Clause of Purpose “quī/quae/quod” + subjunctive mood verb Relative Purpose Clauses have a form of the relative pronouns as their “trigger” word. e.g. miles vēnit legatum quī nuntiaret bellum.
