SIMPLE SENTENCE REMINDERS 1.First, it begins with a capital letter. 2.In addition, it includes an end mark— either a period [. ], question mark [ ? ], or exclamation point [ ! ]. 3.Most importantly, the complete sentence must contain at least one main clause. 7. WHAT ARE COMPOUND SENTENCES? Compound Sentence: Two or more independent clauses joined together either by a semicolon or a comma + coordinating conjunction. (Two adults together.)  Ex: I walked to the store, and I bought some milk.  Ex: I walked to the store; I bought some milk. REMEMBER: Coordinating Conjunctions: F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. - For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So

8. RULES FOR COMPOUND SENTENCES WITH COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS: Only put two independent clauses together if they GO TOGETHER. Ex: I like cheese, so I eat it a lot. – GOOD Do NOT put two independent clauses together that are not related. Ex: I like cheese, and Amy is fun. – BAD

9. RULES FOR COMPOUND SENTENCES WITH COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS: Use a comma with a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) to combine two independent clauses. The comma ALWAYS goes BEFORE the coordinating conjunction. ALWAYS: My dog is the best dog ever, so I love her a lot. NEVER: My dog is the best dog ever so, I love her a lot.

10. RULES FOR COMPOUND SENTENCES WITH SEMICOLONS: Only use a semicolon to put two independent clauses together if they are very, very closely related. Think of a Comma + Coordinating as dating. Think of a Semicolon as married. Ex: Some people write with a word processor; others write with a pen or pencil.

13. A complex sentence is an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. It always has a subordinating conjunction such as because, since, after, although, or when.

14.  When the subordinating conjunction is in the BEGINNING, you need a comma after the dependent clause. EXAMPLE: When When Mow Mow tears into the presents, I become angry.

15.  When the subordinating conjunction is in the MIDDLE, you do NOT need a comma after the independent clause. EXAMPLE: when I become angry when Mow Mow tears into the presents.
