2. BELL RINGER O Get out Student Journal O Pg. 5, Lesson 2, Journal Entry O Write a few sentences about what behaviors would make you suspect another person was using drugs. O Ask and discuss: O Have you ever heard people say they were “addicted” to something –TV show, food, or activity –? O What comes to mind when you think of someone being addicted to a drug?

3. MOTIVATION O People sometimes use the idea of addiction to describe an activity they really enjoy or have a hard time stopping or not doing. O They may use it lightly or in a joking way. O When talking about drug addiction, most people understand the serious consequences: health, social, environmental, family, and financial problems

4. DRUG MISUSE AND ABUSE O Experts distinguish between the terms misuse, abuse, and addiction in regard to drug use. O Legal drugs have legitimate medical uses and can be prescribed by a doctor or bought over the counter. O These drugs can be used responsibly, but any drug (legal or illegal) can be dangerous if it’s misused or abused.

5. ASK & DISCUSS O Work with a partner to write the definition for each term associated with drugs: O misuse O abuse O You can write this definition under your journal entry O Be ready to share!

6. DEFINITIONS O Drug misuse: the use of legally prescribed or over-the-counter drugs. O In greater amounts, more often, in unintended ways. O Drug abuse: the use of illegal drugs or the inappropriate use of legal drugs O To produce pleasure, alleviate stress, avoid reality or alter perceptions O That’s done deliberately and repeatedly to achieve these effects O That causes problems for the user

7. MISUSE EXAMPLES O Taking more doses of cough syrup than recommended during the day to treat your cough O Taking a double dose of your allergy medicine when your symptoms are bad O Using someone else’s prescription medicine to treat a similar condition O Stopping use of antibiotics before the prescribed amount has been taken O Taking leftover antibiotics for an infection for which they haven’t been prescribed

8. ABUSE EXAMPLES O Taking large doses of cough syrup in order to get high O Using an allergy medicine to keep you awake while studying for a test O Taking someone else’s prescription medicine to experience the side effects O Drinking enough alcohol to make you sick O Drinking any alcohol if your under the age of 21 O Using any kind of illegal drug

9. WHAT IS DRUG ADDICTION? O Addiction - A chronic (repeating) brain disease characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences. O It is a brain disease because drugs change both the structures of the brain and how it works. O These brain changes can lead to harmful or self- destructive behaviors. O It’s chronic because these brain changes can be ongoing and long lasting. O Someone who’s addicted finds it extremely hard to stop using a drug. The person may be able to stop for a while, but often relapses or goes back to using the drug.

10. Addiction Continued O Drug seeking and use can become compulsive because the drive to get and use the drug is very strong. O Harmful consequences of drug addiction can include: O physical health problems O emotional problems O social problems O troubles with family, friends, school work, money, or the law.

12. REVIEW O How do drugs change the brain? O What are some of the risk factors that can contribute to addiction? O What are the stages of addiction? O What are some of the negative consequences of addiction?

13. With your same group O Workbook pg. 7 O Read the case studies and decide which stage of addiction each one shows. O Be prepared to explain your reasoning. O TE pg. 23 for correct responses

14. EXIT TICKET O Describe the difference between drug misuse and drug abuse, and give a specific example of each.
