Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Bad practices Elderly jobless people are often offered inappropriate training. Single skilled aged workers are offered training in unsuitable sectors. Jobless people are often left to educational “market” experiment. Lack of motivation results in lack of interest from the participants. A training program which is inappropriate for the trainee’s background and expectations can make a trainee withdraw and not participate in the training. Not properly functioning equipment creates lack of satisfaction and disappointment in the participants.

Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Good practices Provide job seeking skills to older workers who have just lost their jobs. Initial interview to gather information about the trainees’ background and expectations. Assess whether a person needs upgrading or a complete new start. Create a separate learning plan for each individual, so that the individual understands the concrete benefit of training, can be motivated and can be helped to focus. Include training in skills and needs about CV preparation, interviews, etc. Implement user friendly techniques and technologies. Maintain a high level of interest and motivation. Train on how to work with interactive tools. Focus on practical aspects. Present key studies. Collect and elaborate feedback from the participants.

Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Recommendations for trainers (1) Do not offer “one size fits all” program. Design the session so that key outcomes are delivered. Tailor the session so that it fits the participants. Group participants according to their background and ambition. Training and content should be learner-centred. Both trainers and trainees should have a high level of interest and motivation for the training course. The training course should develop the trainee’s skills on how to use the acquired skills and competences from the training, so as to promote his/her career and employability after the training. The training package should be related to the learner’s needs. The training course should be developed having in mind a targeted design and concept. Build on participants’ experience

Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Recommendations for trainers (2) Use updated methods and approaches for training adults. Define and organise the right student group. Define and organise the right starting assignment, which can be directly used in practice, so as to maintain interest of participants. Define and organise the right learning environment, so that each participant can learn from each other and give the feeling of progress by ´learning by doing´. Test the equipment and ensure technical support, so that technical problems do not discourage the participants. Training should be simple, to avoid technical problems, which may discourage the participants. The trainer should be prepared for the training, should keep the goal clear in his/her mind and should become inspired of the participants’ ideas.

Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Conclusions (1) High motivation of participants before the training and even higher after the training. The interactivity of the training curriculum seems well designed, the goals were updated and modified according to the participants’ suggestions. A re-design and re-selection of the material provided should be possibly done in the future, some participants thought that it is too broad and the level too high. The workshop pace was considered fast, which is logical. The content was interesting, the material helpful, closely relevant to the subject and practical in matter. The general impression of the written material was very good. The media used were adequate and contributed to a better understanding of the subject.

Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Conclusions (2) There were ample exercises, the time devoted to exercises was adequate, participants were encouraged to cooperate in them, and their general impression of the exercises was good. The breaks were adequate in number and in duration. Participants believed that they have learned much during the training. The participants ratings of the composition of the trainees sample was very positive, as they all had similar background and level of previous knowledge, the atmosphere was pleasant and they felt comfortable in asking questions. Trainers were rated as competent professionals, dedicated and with a good teaching attitude, who could appropriately answer their questions. The set-up of the training course was positively evaluated, the supervision good, the location pleasant, the general impression of the course preparation and of the classes was very good.

Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” Final Presentation, European Cooperative House Brussels, 16 Dec.2009 Training +45 “Teachers Facilitating Learning among Elders” General outcomes In general, the TOP+ training was well accepted by the participants.
