Is Your Training Program REALLY Working? How to achieve the highest ROI for your training investment
2
A Simple Review of the Basics Designing an effective training program Evaluating the Training Program
3
Designing the Training Program Step One: Identify specific measurable outcomes Step Two: Identify the behaviors that contribute to these defined results Step Three: Develop and deliver training to achieve these behaviors
4
WHAT actionable knowledge or skill is learned so that WHAT applied concept/behavior occurs so that WHAT measurable result happens?
5
Evaluating the Training Program Step One: Are the desired results being achieved? Step Two: Identify where the process is breaking down (Training or performance?) Step Three: If training, revisit content and delivery process.
6
Getting a Little More Advanced Performing an in-depth analysis of your training program Establishing performance accountabilities Measuring results
7
Evaluate Course Content Identify specific facts being taught Determine frequency of application (low- high) Determine relative complexity (low-high) Determine relative business impact (low- high) Assign priority 1-2-3 compared with strategic business objectives
9
Review Delivery Methods Identify all delivery/reinforcement options currently being used Review for consistency Compare appropriateness of delivery method with priority level
10
Review Current Evaluation Methods Level One: Reaction - Did the participants like the program? Level Two: Learning - What knowledge, skills, etc, did the the participants gain? Level Three: Behavior - Do the participants behave (I.e., DO things) differently as a result of the program? Level Four: Results - What measurable results were gained from performance improvement? Donald Kirkpatrick, Evaluating Training Programs: The Four Levels (1994)

Establish clear accountabilities Manager: Help! I need training out here! Manager: I don’t have time for that. Just come out here and train them again! Manager: Hmmm. Good Point. How about them? Training: Tell them to do what I taught them to do! Training: Hey, who’s accountable here? Training: Now, we’re getting somewhere!
