1 The Respiratory System Unit 1-6 Notes Mr. Hefti – Pulaski Biology

2 Respiratory System Fun Facts 1.300 million alveoli may be found in a pair of human lungs. 2.Approximately 1500 miles of airways are present in human lungs. 3.In human beings, the right lung is larger than the left lung for accommodating the heart. 4.Yawning occurs when the brain detects low oxygen levels in the blood and it triggers the lungs to take in a large volume of oxygen. 5.An average person breathes in the equivalent of 13 pints of air every minute. 6.Young children laugh on average 300 times in a day, whereas adults average 15 to 100 times a day. 7.Hiccups are caused by various things and occur due to sudden movements of the diaphragm. This is a product of spasms and eating food too fast. 8.“Laughter is the best medicine” may have some truth - it helps to boost the immune system. 9.When some irritants like dust particle or pollen come in contact with mucus membranes in the nose the brain triggers a sneeze. 10.The fastest recorded sneeze particles were released at 120 miles per hour! 11.The droplets that come out while coughing can travel up to 3 feet. That is why it is so important to cover mouths while coughing.

5 Make connections… Which organelle has a similar function? – Mitochondria (location of cellular respiration) – Cell membrane (substances diffuse in and out) What is the link between the respiratory system and the digestive system? – The respiratory system is responsible for the gas exchange needed to release the energy from nutrients broken down and absorbed by the digestive system
