National Motivation u 2.6 million intersection related crashes annually u Represents 41% of all 6.33 million police reported crashes u In Minnesota, 129 out of 583 (22.1%) fatal crashes are at intersections u In the US, 8,659 of 38,252 (22.6%) of fatal crashes were intersection related v 31.7% occurred at signalized intersections v 68.3% occurred at unsignalized intersections (stop sign, no controls, other sign). Approach u Measure gaps that drivers take under actual road conditions. Collect data regarding intersection entry behavior. u Evaluate suite of sensors to ensure that they are able to measure those gaps accurately and able to distinguish between unsafe and safe gaps at the level that the existing literature specifies. u Develop set of interface concepts with which to communicate the existence of an unsafe vs safe gap in the intersection to the driver. u Evaluate selected set of interface concepts.

Goal u Design and evaluate information “concepts” for sign elements to support detection and acceptance of safe gaps in mainline traffic. u Explore out of the “toolbox” concepts. u Prohibitive frame: Provide information regarding unsafe gaps. u Final judgment of safety and responsibility for action must remain with driver.

Assumptions u Many factors determine gap safety. u As a non-cooperative system, these sign concepts do not have “preview” of all these factors. u Therefore, system is “blind” and must make assumptions about condition. u With vehicle classification, will be able to adjust gap for vehicle. u For liability reasons, sign concepts must assume worst- case condition. v Left turns + older drivers + 1-stage u This may be perceived as non-credible to drivers in all other conditions.

Main Lessons u Additional information can be used. u All sign concepts resulted in shifts towards the safe gap threshold v However, threshold was perceived as too conservative (not personalized) u Compliance increases when visibility of traffic condition is reduced. v Old drivers, night condition u Dynamic aspects of (Icon and Split-hybrid) signs facilitate comprehension. v Map sign changes to changes in environment u Young drivers may “calibrate” system.

Next Steps u “Personalized” gap thresholds v Cooperative systems u MUTCD compliant formats v Close interaction with MnDOT engineers u Test compliant formats in simulator u Validate with test site experiment u Field operational testing u Consider role of signs in larger safety programs (Training & Education). v Older drivers must perceive own limitations to appreciate need for decision support v Drivers need understanding of functions (include in licensing tests)

Microscopic study of driver behavior needed to resolve this issue.
