Chapter 1 Humans In The World Of Biology
2
The Scientific Method Scientific Method –A procedure that is used to solve problems or answer questions. –A way of thinking and looking at the world. –A technique used to gather information and reach conclusions.
3
Steps to the Scientific Method Observation Hypothesis PredictionExperiment Analyze Results Conclusions If the results do not support hypothesis Then revise the hypothesis If results support hypothesis Then make new predictions and test them
4
Scientific Method continued Reproducibility- repeat experiments. Publication- publish experiments in a peer reviewed journal. Scientific Theory- a broad-ranging explanation for some aspect of the universe that has been repeatedly confirmed through hypothesis testing.
5
Scientific Method and Research Clinical trials- medical studies on humans.
6
All Living Things Share Basic Characteristics
7
Living things contain nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids
8
Living things are composed of cells
9
Living things reproduce
10
Living things metabolize
11
Living things respond
12
Living things maintain homeostasis
13
Populations of living things evolve and have adaptive traits
14

15
Molecule The chemical components of cells Cell Tissue Organ System Individual The basic unit of life Group of similar cells that perform a common function Two or more different tissues that perform a common function Group of related organs that have a common function A single organism
16
Individual A single organism Population Community Ecosystem Biosphere All individuals of the same species that occupy a given area All the species in an ecosystem that can interact A community and its physical environment The part of the earth that supports life
