Remembrance Day is celebrated on November 11 th every year On July 1, 1867, the provinces we know as Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia joined together in Confederation to create the new country Canada. 1

Canada’s constitution is the system of laws and conventions that our country uses to run itself. The British North America Act came into effect in 1867. The British North America Act is important in Canadian history because it is the Act which officially created the country of Canada. 2

Newfoundland and Labrador was the last province to join Canada Canada Day is on July 1 st and celebrates the anniversary of Confederation. Sir John A. MacDonald was the first Prime Minister of Canada. 3

The Constitution Act of 1982 allows Canadians to change our Constitution without asking the British government for approval. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms legally protects the basic rights and freedoms of all Canadians. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms became part of the Canadian Constitution in 1982. 4

Two of the fundamental freedoms protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights are: Freedom of religion Freedom of thought, belief, opinion, and expression Legal rights protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms include: The right to life, liberty, and the security of person The right to a fair trial The right to protection against discrimination 5

4 ways we can help protect the environment are: Throw waster or other garbage in designated garbage containers Recycle and reuse as many products as possible, such as paper, glass, and cans Join a carpool, use a bicycle or public transit when possible Get involved with a local group to protect our natural and cultural heritage 6
