Active Voice The subject of the sentence performs the action Examples: The dog bit the postman. I will clean the house every Saturday.

Passive Voice The action is being performed by someone/something Examples: The postman was bitten by the dog. The house will be cleaned by me every Saturday.

Differences between Active and Passive Voice Harry ate six shrimp at dinner. (ACTIVE) At dinner, six shrimp were eaten by Harry. (PASSIVE) The critic wrote a bad review. (ACTIVE) A bad review was written by the critic. (PASSIVE)

Parallel Structure A repeated grammatical form in a sentence Using the same pattern of words to show that two or more things have the same level of importance Examples: Ashley likes to ski, to swim, and to jump. Joe likes singing, walking, and diving.

Bias In favor of or against one thing, person, or group Usually in a way that is considered unfair

Refine To remove impurities or unwanted elements To improve something/make small changes for the better

Indirect Not directly caused by something, or not directly stating/saying something

Characterization The process by which the writer reveals the personality/traits of a character

Indirect Characterization The writer reveals traits about a character without DIRECTLY saying it. You must INFER what the character is like from the information given.
