4. Differences between Active and Passive Voice Harry ate six shrimp at dinner. (ACTIVE) At dinner, six shrimp were eaten by Harry. (PASSIVE) The critic wrote a bad review. (ACTIVE) A bad review was written by the critic. (PASSIVE)

5. Parallel Structure A repeated grammatical form in a sentence Using the same pattern of words to show that two or more things have the same level of importance Examples: Ashley likes to ski, to swim, and to jump. Joe likes singing, walking, and diving.

6. Bias In favor of or against one thing, person, or group Usually in a way that is considered unfair

7. Refine To remove impurities or unwanted elements To improve something/make small changes for the better

8. Indirect Not directly caused by something, or not directly stating/saying something

9. Characterization The process by which the writer reveals the personality/traits of a character

10. Indirect Characterization The writer reveals traits about a character without DIRECTLY saying it. You must INFER what the character is like from the information given.
