Assessing without levels Winsley Primary – January 2016

Rationale for change Change of curriculum to reflect our current society and advancement in technology. Assessment in Levels was intended to be used at the end of the key stage. Progress was measured in a numerical form and masked gaps in learning. No other country used our system of assessment.

National Curriculum 2014 The highlights

Stronger emphasis on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spelling (for example, the use of commas and apostrophes will be taught in KS1). A greater focus on phonics in FS-YR3 in reading and writing. Handwriting (not currently assessed under the national curriculum) is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy. Spoken English has a greater emphasis, with children to be taught debating, reciting poetry by heart and presenting skills.

Mathematics Year 1 children will be expected to learn to count up to 100 and beyond and learn number bonds to 20. Simple fractions (1/4, 1/3 and 1/2) will be taught from KS1, and by the end of primary school, children should be able to convert decimal fractions to simple fractions (e.g. 0.375 = 3/8) and be able to multiply and divide them. Year 4 children will be expected to know times tables up to 12×12.

Other Changes Modern foreign language is mandatory in KS2. Children will be expected to master basic grammar and accurate pronunciation and to converse, present, read and write in the language.

Curriculum aims Future learning is built on solid foundations which do not need to be re-taught. Children are more able to keep up, so that there are fewer gaps in learning. More children will become critical thinkers.

What do we use to assess the learning? We use a combination of : day to day assessment in the class marking and feedback in books statutory assessments Winsley use School Pupil Tracker Online to track children’s progress and attainment.

Summative assessment language Key Stage 2 Test: End of key stage 2 Test Outcome will be a scaled score based around 100. Teacher assessment: Working at the Expected Standard in all subjects except Writing where a Greater Depth standard will be assessed. Children working below the key stage will be assessed against different criteria.
