Study Hall: Assigned Seats. Work on something quietly.
2
Warm Up If scientists can not travel inside the Earth, how do they know about the interior of the Earth?
3
Volunteers…. Seismologists study seismic waves from earthquakes; they know that these seismic waves travel at differing speeds through different materials (liquid or solid regions of the Earth). Scientists also know the size of the Earth; by measuring how long it takes to detect seismic activity on opposite sides of the Earth, they have determined how much of the Earth is solid, liquid, and the composition of each layer.
4
Journals Journal for five minutes about whatever you would like to.
5
Earth: BrainPOP http://www.brainpop.com/science/earthsystem /earthsstructure/
6
Candy LAB! You will each get a piece of candy. Do not open it before I tell you to. – If you do, it goes in the trash. We will read through the directions together first.
7
Study with your partner! You have the next ten minutes to study with your partner. Ask me questions about things you don’t understand. And quiz each other to make sure you understand!!!
8
REVIEW GAME!
9
Raise your hand if you know…. List the correct layers of the Earth
10
Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core
11
Raise your hand if you know…. Which layer is the densest?
12
Inner Core
13
Raise your hand if you know…. What layer of the Earth has convection currents which moves the Earth’s tectonic plates?
14
– Convection currents are happening in the mantle. – Heat rises and cold sinks.
15
Raise your hand if you know…. Which layer do convection currents happen in?
16
Mantle
17
Raise your hand if you know…. What are convection currents?
18
Convection currents are when cold air/liquid sinks and hot air/liquid rises.
19
Raise your hand if you know…. What do convection currents cause on the Earth’s surface?
20
Tectonic plates to slowly move.
21
Raise your hand if you know…. Which layer of the Earth is liquid?

35
Raise your hand if you know…. How is an igneous rock formed?
36
Igneous Rock Cooling Magma or lava that has cooled and solidified (become a solid)
37
Raise your hand if you know…. How is a sedimentary rock formed?
38
