Vocabulary Carcinoid: a tumor Lung Cancer: cancer in the lungs

Overview Lung cancer begins with the out of control growth of abnormal cells in the lungs, it then invades nearby tissues and form tumors.

Causes Smoking (any form) Second hand smoke Exposure to certain chemicals Family History Lowered immunity Past lung disease Past cancer treatment

Forms Non-Small Cell Most common type of lung cancer 85 % Subtypes Squamous cell carcinoma Adenocarcinoma Large cell carcinoma Small Cell also known as oat cell cancer 10-15% of lung cancers are small cell cancers tends to spread quickly Lung Carcinoid fewer than 5% sometimes called lun neuroendocrine tumors grow slowly and rarely spread

Symptoms ●Coughing ●Chest pain ●Hoarseness ●Weight loss ●Loss of appetite ●Coughing up blood or rust colored spit or phlegm ●Shortness of breath ●Feeling tired or weak ●Infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia

Conclusion Lung cancer is categorized into three main forms non-small cell, small cell, and lung carcinoid. It is caused from a variety of different things although many times lung cancer is linked to smoking. Some of the symptoms include coughing, chest pain, hoarseness, weight loss, etc. And finally there are 3 ways to treat lung cancer- surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
