2 Finals (Writing Component)  NEXT WEEK FRIDAY MAY 30  4-5 short answer questions on this drug unit  Make sure you study your notes and understand the effects of drugs on the brain and on society

3 Gallery Walk!  Pair up! 1 piece of paper for each pair. Number your paper 1-8.  There are 8 pictures of common household items on the walls  For each picture, answer the following in a sentence or two:  Can this be used as a drug? How?  What effects will it give you?  We will go over the answers in 10 minutes  Those correctly identifying ALL pictures will receive 3 tickets each

7 Inhalants  Inhalants are drugs with intoxicating vapors that are breathed in without burning or heating  Most inhalants exist legally for other purposes  Usually sprayed into a plastic bag then “huffed” or inhaled directly from an open container  Has properties of stimulants, depressants, and hallucinogens  Does not fall in any single category

8 Examples of Inhalants  Petroleum products (gasoline, propane, butane)  Household chemicals (paint thinner, glue)  Nail polish remover  Nitrous oxide (NOS)  Aerosol cans (hairspray, deodorant)

10 Effects of Inhalants  Range from alcohol-like intoxication to intense euphoria to hallucinations  Headache  Nausea & vomiting  Slurred speech  Loss of motor coordination  Wheezing  “Sniffer’s rash” around the nose  Hallucinations  In general, smaller amounts = intoxication & larger amounts = hallucinations

11 Harms of Inhalants  Many chemicals in inhalants can destroy myelin, the protective cover on nerve cells  Inhalants can also permanently damage brain cells by blocking their oxygen, known as brain hypoxia  Heart damage  Liver failure  Muscle weakness  Reduced blood cell production
