2 Weekly First Grade Fluency Homework Directions: (This process should be repeated every night.) 1. Student reads the passage aloud to the parent, who is timing them for EXACTLY one minute. During this time, the parent is also keeping track of any errors the child makes while reading, BUT does NOT try to correct the child at this time. 2. Parent records the number of words read in a minute (use the numbers at the end of each line to help you add quickly) and the number of errors. 3. Parent NOW points out and corrects the errors made to the child. 4. Student should retell everything they remember about the story to the parent. GOAL: Read 60 words per minute with a minimum of 90% accuracy. Retell at least three events from the story in the correct sequence. Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great leader. He was born on January 15, 1929 15 in Atlanta. Martin’s father was a minister and his mother was a teacher. 28 Early in Martin’s life, he saw that African Americans were not being treated 41 equally. This made Martin sad. He began to think of ways that he could stop 56 this inequality. When Martin was older he thought he could help make a 69 change by speaking out about what he believed in. Dr. King began to 82 organize peaceful protests and marches to fight for equal rights of all races. 95 In 1963, Dr. King gave his most famous speech at a march in Washington D.C 110 His speech began with “I have a dream.” In 1964, Dr. King was awarded the 125 Nobel Peace Prize. Today we celebrate the work of Dr. King each January. 138 MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursday Words read in 1 minute - (subtract) number of mistakes = total words read correctly Parent initials
