Swine Show Success A guide for management of show pigs Including the use of Paylean ® in show pigs

Showing pigs today Pigs keep getting leaner and more muscular. Today ’ s show pigs need careful attention to maintain their health and minimize stress. Here ’ s up-to-date information from industry experts.

Proper handling of show pigs Stress can occur in show pigs due to: Restriction of feed and water Presence of the stress gene Heavy muscling Rough handling (before, during or after the show ring)

Proper handling of show pigs Most problems occur after the show, primarily due to handling procedures. Pre-showing Gentle treatment Few pigs per pen No electric prods Post-showing Aggressive treatment Mixed with larger groups of pigs Electric prods used Crowded on truck

Proper use of animal health products Use animal health products according to label directions. Administer at proper levels. Do not use unapproved levels. Administer during the proper phase of growth. Do not use early or at an improper weight. Use only on approved species. Use feed additives along with proper nutrition. Mix feed additives properly.

Proper use of animal health products Play fair. Help maintain the integrity of the shows in which you participate by following all rules and standards. Earn the confidence of your fellow show participants. Set a good example for young show participants. Be aware that improper use of animal health products is unethical and that such use may be detectable by assays.

A review of one animal health product: Paylean ® What is Paylean? Paylean is a swine feed ingredient that directs nutrients to increase the amount of quality meat in high value cuts and improves production efficiency.

Benefits of Paylean ® in swine production  Faster growth  Improved feed efficiency  Improved dressing percentage (yield)  Increased lean premiums due to heavier muscling  More profit per pig

Proper use of Paylean ® in show pigs Can Paylean be used in show pigs? Yes. Elanco Animal Health supports only the authorized use of Paylean, and encourages individuals, show organizations and leaders to ensure that all animal health products are used according to label instruction, and under appropriate professional care supervision.

Proper use of Paylean ® in show pigs Paylean may be used in show swine, as long as it is used in full accordance with the approved FDA label. Following are some specific label restrictions and stipulations that must be followed: Paylean may only be used in swine. Paylean may only be fed at the FDA approved level of 4.5 to 18 grams per ton of feed for finishing swine. Based on experience in commercial operations, Elanco recommends feeding Paylean at 4.5 to 9 grams per ton of feed for approximately four weeks prior to marketing.

Proper use of Paylean ® in show pigs Paylean may only be fed to finishing swine from 150 pounds to 240 pounds body weight. Paylean must be fed in a complete ration containing at least 16% crude protein. There are no approved extra-label uses for Paylean. Extra-label use is illegal. Feed Paylean so your pigs receive it for approximately four weeks. Increase total dietary lysine by 0.30% from present feeding levels.

Improper use of Paylean Do not offer Paylean in a complete feed at levels less than 4.5 g/ton or greater than 18 g/ton. Do not topdress with a Type A Paylean premix or intermediate premix (Type B). Do not restrict water intake.

Conclusions on downer pigs This has been an industry-recognized problem for more than 15 years. It is reported to be prevalent in heavily muscled and/or poorly handled pigs. Field information suggests that under some conditions the downer rate may increase when Paylean is used. Elanco is learning more about downer pigs through internal and collaborative research.

Recommendations to the show industry Educate show exhibitors on proper use of animal health products. Conduct business with buyers and livestock transporters who: Understand the need for proper handling of heavily muscled pigs Understand and appreciate that show pigs require low stress handling practices. Reduce or eliminate the use of electric prods. Keep hogs cool during pooling of pigs prior to handling. Load animals only during the cool part of the day. Allow proper square footage per pig on transport trucks.
