I will compare the cultures of American Indians in Texas prior to European colonization such as Gulf, Plains, Puebloan, and Southeastern by creating totem poles illustrating the cultures of the American Indians, presenting my culture totem pole to the class, and completing a comparison graphic organizer based on the presentations.

5. In groups of two, you will be assigned an American Indian tribe in Texas.
You will research the American Indians tribe. You will receive a handout that list the “must haves”, that you must research. (example: diet, appearance, daily life, etc.)
You will write your notes on the assigned American Indian tribe on the notebook paper provided.

6. Once the research is complete you will create 8x11 posters illustrating each must have.

8x11 poster of their appearance
8x11 poster of their homes
8x11 poster of their diet
The posters should have pictures and words.

7. Constructing totem Poles
Once your research is complete and you have created your 8x11 posters for all “must haves”, you will begin to construct and design your totem pole.
Using construction paper, create a totem pole that represents your assigned American Indian tribe.

8. Presentations Your group will present your totem poles to the class.
Using all of the totem poles you will fill in a graphic organizer comparing the 10 tribes.

Write three to four sentences about your tribe. Tell me about their diet, houses, daily life, appearance, etc.
