Teaching and Learning and Internet2 Fantasy or Reality? Do we know how to use I-2 for teaching? Is I-2 ready for folks to use for teaching? Are our campuses ready to support our faculty to use I-2 for teaching?
3
Instructional Need What is the learning objective? Will it enhance learning or provide information? What’s the teaching issue? Who is the target audience? How to best approach the problem? How do we “learn”?
4
Learning Diagram Bloom’s Taxonomy
5
Examples of Using Internet2 Introductory course on weather and climate, large lecture format To expose students to how scientists view the world and the excitement of science Lab Section To teach students how to read weather maps and make forecasts
6
Another Example Weather for Pilots (A distance learning course) My primary goal is to support pilots/student pilots who want to increase weather knowledge

Internet2 Application Practice and Feedback Example lesson using VISITView Example lesson using VIS-5d

Faculty Development - Believe It Or Not

Faculty Development Ground zero to: “At some point, I would welcome a chance to speak with you about how I might go about establishing an internal African- American music website to link to all of my classes. The class website seems limiting, as I understand it, since it is meant to target a particular class; I’d like to establish something at some point that interlinks all the classes I teach. But that for another day…”

Designing an I2 Component Have a goal What is the learning objective? Are the resources available? Who is the target audience? How does it address the learning diagram? Plan it out

Can We Do More of This? In Wisconsin, we are still taking back roads to the highway. To do the Blues class with our Chicago guest, we need to make special arrangements to have the connections and bandwidth we need.
14
We have work to do before we can really take advantage of I-2 for teaching in a seamless manner. Our connections to the NAP in Chicago need significant upgrading (in process). We need to review our campus network standards and assure that building networks can manage the traffic.
15
We need to know that our colleagues at the other end are coming from good connections. We need to manage our network end to end. It’s this QOS stuff. And it costs money.
