Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers Textbook page 222 IAN page 86
2
What is a reciprocal? A reciprocal is the fraction inverted or flipped. (The product of reciprocals is 1. Example: 2 / 3. 3 / 2 = 1)
3
How do you divide fractions and/or mixed numbers? To divide fractions or mixed numbers: change mixed numbers to improper fractions flip the second fraction (that is, find the reciprocal of the divisor) multiply numerators multiply denominators simplify/reduce
4
Example 1: Find the reciprocal. (A) 1 / 5 the reciprocal is 5 / 1 or 5 (B) 3 / 4 the reciprocal is 4 / 3 (C) 2 1 / 3 = 7 / 3 the reciprocal is 3 / 7
5
Example 2: Divide. Write the answer in simplest form. (A) 4 / 5 ÷ 5 4 / 5 ÷ 5 / 1 = 4 / 5. 1 / 5 = 4 / 25 (B) 3 / 4 ÷ 1 / 2 3 / 4. 2 / 1 = 6 / 4 = 1 2 / 4 = 1 1 / 2 (C) 2 2 / 3 ÷ 1 1 / 6 8 / 3. 7 / 6 = 8 / 3. 6 / 7 = 48 / 21 = 2 6 / 21 = 2 2 / 7
