Lesson 074 Learning Goal: You should be able to… Identify the characteristics of Chemical Changes Success criteria: Can you … Answer four questions on google classroom see lesson 073 Justify choice of … for different examples Physical and chemical properties Physical and chemical changes

Vocabulary for physical properties, chemical properties, physical changes and chemical changes Solubility element compound mixture luster malleable density sonorous ductile conductivity (Heat and electricity) See title for 4 terms gas Liquid solid exothermic endothermic energy precipitate reactant product

Write To Think 074 Please obtain the correct laptop, log in to Google classroom and complete the answers to the four questions in the next 15 minutes!

Question 1 List at least TWO physical properties for each of the following: A.Magnesium sulphate solution Clear & Liquid B.Precipitate in demonstration 1 White & Solid C.Vinegar Smell ‘sour’ & Liquid D.Carbon dioxide Gas & Odorless E.Calcium chloride White & Granules

Question 2 “A checklist or general summary of what to look for when deciding if something is a chemical change/reaction” 1.A NEW CHEMICAL or CHEMICALS … usually very different properties 2.Color change 3.Gas production (Bubbling, Fizzing, Smell) 4.Precipitate (solid from liquid) forming 5.Energy (Heat, temperature change) 6.Others … flame, light, sound, movement

Question 3 Exothermic reactions and Endothermic reactions Energy changes (Heat, light, sound, temperature) Compare the amount of energy in the chemicals before the reaction with the amount of energy in the chemicals after the reaction Zip lock bag = Heat out = EXO (EXIT) Vinegar/Baking Soda = Heat in = ENDO (IN DO )

Question 4 What do you think happened to the number of particles/atoms in the ‘Ziplock bag” during demonstration 3? TBA (to be answered by Friday Dec 4th!)

Physical properties demo (PP) Physical properties are the characteristics of matter that often can be detected with your senses or measured. They don’t change the matter into something completely different or new. It’s a feature or a descriptor. They are used to identify what matter it is. Copper … MetalMelt and boil points ColorHardness DensitySolubility Conduct heat and electricity

Chemical properties demo (CP) Chemical properties are the characteristics of matter that describes how it might or might not interact with something else. They can or will change the matter into something completely different or describe how they wont change. Copper Quite un-reactive but does slowly tarnish with oxygen Reacts slowly with hydrochloric acid to form hydrogen gas and copper chloride Doesn’t react with water Doesn’t burn easily

Physical change demo (PC) A physical change happens when the matter is altered BUT is still the same chemical. It looks different physically BUT its atoms aren’t joined to anything new. It doesn’t change the matter into something completely different. You can usually get the same matter back quite easily. Ice water melts to liquid water (Phase change) Salt in water (Solid into Solution) Sugar in water (Solid into Solution)

Chemical change demo (CC) A chemical change or REACTION happens when the matter is combined or recombined and becomes a new chemical. It looks different physically AND its atoms are joined in new ways. It does change the matter into something completely different. You can usually NOT get the same matter back. Magnesium burn (magnesium into magnesium oxide) Sugar burn (Sucrose into carbon dioxide and water) Alcohol burn (Propanol into carbon dioxide and water)

So … what do you think? 1. Nickel is an silver color PP 2. Wood is flammable. It can burn if lit. CP 3. The melting point of water is 0 o C PP 5. A piece of paper is burning. CC

So … what do you think? Sodium will produce hydrogen gas if placed in water CP Vinegar tastes sour CP or PP? A cell phone battery gets really hot CC or CR? Blowing up a balloon, making it bigger PC … why?

So … what do you think? Phosphorous burning in air CC or CR Writing on paper with a pencil PC Silver will conduct electricity PP Setting off a firework CR

Physical properties defn (PP) Physical properties are the characteristics of matter that often can be detected with your senses or measured.
