Coasts, Seas, and Lakes Caspian Sea in Southwest Russia Lake Baikal is the world’s deepest lake- it holds about one fifth of the world’s fresh water! 5,387 ft. deep!

Rivers The Dnieper, Don, and Volga are three of the largest southern flowing rivers in the region. Rivers such as the Ob, Yenisy, and Lena flow north to the Arctic Ocean.

Natural Resources Forest, energy and mineral resources are among the world’s richest. Caspian Sea region -Coal, natural gas and oil The area is also rich in metals such as copper, gold, and iron. Lukoil Oil (Russian oil company) has over 10 trillion barrels of oil in reserves.

Climate Mid-Latitude- Much of the region is in the Humid Continental- Western Russia, - major cities- major producer of grain Mid-Latitude- Steppe or Semi-Arid- located mainly in southwest Russia near the “stan” region High-Latitude- Much of eastern Russia or Siberia has extremely cold weather- Subarctic- sparse population due to extreme cold – Taiga vegetation

Culture- Settlement Most Russian people live in the European section of Russia (west of Urals) 2/3 of population lives in the cities (9 million people in Moscow), Kiev, St. Petersburg, Minsk).
