The farmers of Western Pennsylvania Grain was very difficult to transport to market due to few and poor roads Many farmers turned their grain into whiskey It was easier to transport and they made a greater profit. Many farmers were able to distill about 20 gallons of whiskey and sell it for about $1/gallon. That means farmers made about $20 year as their income

The Math One gallon of whiskey sold for about $1 Most farmers made about $20/year The tax was $.25/gallon=$5/year That is 25% of the farmers yearly income

The Rebellion Farmers felt their were being taxed without fair representation Taxes were collected in person The tax collector was the brunt of farmer’s anger Some were attacked Their homes were burned Their families were threatened
