3 Treaty of Tordesillas - agreement to divide the newly discovered lands outside of Europe between Spain and Portugal. – Pope Alexander VI drew an imaginary line from north to south through the Atlantic Ocean. – Spain claimed most of the Americas and Portugal claimed territory in Africa and Asia.

6 Conquistadors – Spanish adventurers Lucas Vásquez de Ayllón – North Carolina; Cape Fear Hernando de Soto – claimed southern and eastern parts of US. From Cuba, he traveled north through FL, GA, SC, & NC, then southwest to Mississippi River then to OK.

7 Native Americans & Africans Millions of Native Americans died under Spanish rule from being overworked and diseases. Missionaries suggested replacing them with slaves who had more immunity and were capable of working in warm climates. Slaves were prisoners of war captured by fellow Africans and sold to the Spanish and Portuguese

8 Impact of religion Catholic Pope Alexander VI gave Spain claim to the land west of imaginary line Spanish priests, missionaries were sent to convert the Native Americans to Catholicism Missions were small settlements with a church, fort, and homes for missionaries and their converts lived.

13 Other European Explorers John Cabot looking for a northwest passage to Asia sailed along shores of Newfoundland and claimed it (Canada) for England Giovanni da Verrazano was a French explorer who landed at the mouth of the Cape Fear River and thought he Pacific Ocean was not far west of NC. He was the 1 st European to visit NC.

17 Why is it called America? Columbus believed he had found a western route to Asia. But Amerigo Vespucci noted that the plants and animals he found along the coastline of brazil were unknown to Asia, Europe, and Africa. He concluded it must be a new continent.

18 European Exploration Chapter 3 Spanish concentrated their efforts in the Caribbean and Central and South America and controlled the southern sea routes. Englishman John Cabot did not find a northwest passage from North America to Asia but claimed Newfoundland (Canada)

20 Giovanni da Verrazano (French) thought he found route to Asia but had mistaken the water behind the Outer Banks as the Pacific Ocean. His reports to Kind Francis were the basis for France’s claims to land.

21 European reach NC Ponce de Leon explored east and west coasts of Florida. He claimed peninsula for Spain. Vasquez de Ayllon’s was the first and only attempt to settle NC for Spain. Hernando De Soto moved through Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.
