2 Spanish Banking Many options Differences with the U.S. Only open until 2:00 PM, except one day a week (some) Do not use checks often Long lines Most have similar services and commissions For those under 26, look for “joven account”

3 Opening an Account Until you have your residency number (NIE), you can only open a non-resident account (cuenta de no residente) Some branches will still refuse you without the TIE (Tarjeta de Residencia) Bring your passport with you Make sure they have the option to change to resident account Once you have the NIE, bring it to the bank This may change your bank account number

6 Popular Banks La Caixa “Joven” account available Cuenta Nómina Multiestrella No-commission banking Usually flexible when opening with passport Located throughout Spain They may require you to contract extra services in order to open an account. We discourage you from doing this.

7 Popular Banks Santander Santander 4B Some branches are flexible when opening with passport Huge presence in Spain A former grantee had an easy experience opening an account at a branch located close to the NH Zurbano (hotel) on Calle José Abascal, 52

8 Popular Banks ING Online bank without fees Also have offices in major cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, and Sevilla Offices are open until late afternoon/early evening Free transfers within Europe Can use any 4B ATM without fee May request a copy of your TIE (residency card) before opening account

9 Popular Banks Bankia “Joven” account available Mainly found in Madrid - Branches in all main cities In the past they have been strict about NIE requirement A former grantee was able to open an account without a NIE at: C/ López de Hoyos, 133 (Contact: Custodia Rodriguez Orvay)

10 Using your Account You will not receive a checkbook. Transfers can be done at ATMs, online, or through a bank teller Debit card works like in US Cheaper fees if using your bank’s network of ATMs 4B, ServiRed, Euro 6000 Network can be found on the back of your debit card “Libreta” Statements

12 Comunidad de Madrid Payments Information for Comunidad de Madrid TAs only: Your school provides a monthly stipend of 1,115€ Make sure your school has your bank account information Most schools pay by direct deposit although some use checks Fulbright Commission is not responsible for your monthly stipend payments (1,115€). The Commission portion (230€/month) is paid in full at Orientation
