Introduction Almost students speak English in a toneless and singsong tone. They can ’ t distinguish the tone between Chinese and English. The most problematic: Reading together

Why? Reasons: 1. The tone of reading Chinese in elementary school. 2. Chinese and English have no difference in speech sounds.

Differences Chinese - tone language English - intonation and stress- timed language

Tone language: in every word and morpheme. Intonation language: in a tone unit. *Are you planning a busy day?

Stress-timed language Stress syllable: clear, long Light syllable: cloudy, short * Record: [ ‘ r ɛ k ɚ d]-Noun [r ɪ ‘ k ɔ rd]-Verb *Records show progress.
