Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 3–9) Main Idea and Vocabulary Example 1:Divide Multiples of 10 Example 2:Divide Multiples of 10
3
Main Idea/Vocabulary I will use basic facts and patterns to divide multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000 mentally. quotient dividend divisor
4
Example 1 Divide Multiples of 10 Since 800 is a multiple of 10, you can use the basic fact and continue the pattern. Find 800 ÷ 2 mentally. 8 ÷ 2 = 4 80 ÷ 2 = 40 800 ÷ 2 = 400 8 ones divided by 2 equals 4 ones. 8 tens divided by 2 equals 4 tens. 8 hundreds divided by 2 equals 4 hundreds. Answer: So, 800 ÷ 2 = 400.

Example 2 Divide Multiples of 10 Mr. Dexter drove his car about 2,500 miles on a long- distance trip. He drove an average of 500 miles a day. About how many days did his trip take? One Way: Use fact families. 5 × 5 = 25 50 × 5 = 250 500 × 5 = 2,500 25 ÷ 5 = 5 250 ÷ 50 = 5 2,500 ÷ 500 = 5
7
Example 2 Divide Multiples of 10 2500 ÷ 500 Another Way: Cross out zeros to make division easier. Cross out the same number of zeros in both the dividend and divisor. 25 ÷ 5 Divide. Think: 25 ones ÷ 5 = 5 ones Answer: So, 2,500 ÷ 500 = 5. Mr. Dexter’s trip took about 5 days.
