Speed vs Velocity
2
Learning Target I can explain the difference between speed and velocity. I can explain the difference between speed and velocity.
3
Speed Speed (s) – Rate at which an object is moving. Speed (s) – Rate at which an object is moving. How fast is the object moving? How fast is the object moving? speed = distance / time speed = distance / time s = d/t s = d/t Like distance, speed does not depend on direction. Like distance, speed does not depend on direction.
4
Speed A car drives 100 meters in 5 seconds. A car drives 100 meters in 5 seconds. What is the car’s average speed? What is the car’s average speed? s = d/t s = d/t s = (100 m) / (5 s) = 20 m/s s = (100 m) / (5 s) = 20 m/s 100 m 1 s2 s3 s4 s5 s
5
Speed A rocket is traveling at 10 km/s. How long does it take the rocket to travel 30 km? A rocket is traveling at 10 km/s. How long does it take the rocket to travel 30 km? 3 seconds (t=d/s) 3 seconds (t=d/s)
6
Speed A racecar is traveling at 85.0 m/s. How far does the car travel in 30.0 s? A racecar is traveling at 85.0 m/s. How far does the car travel in 30.0 s? d=s∙t d=s∙t d= 2,550m d= 2,550m
7
Velocity Velocity (v) – is speed with direction. Velocity (v) – is speed with direction. velocity = distance / time (include the direction) velocity = distance / time (include the direction) v = d / t v = d / t Directions include: north, south, east, west, + (positive), - (negative) Directions include: north, south, east, west, + (positive), - (negative)
8
Velocity Back to the racecar: Back to the racecar: A racecar is traveling east for 2,550 m. What is the velocity of the car after 30.0 s? A racecar is traveling east for 2,550 m. What is the velocity of the car after 30.0 s? v=d/t v=d/t v= 85 m/s east v= 85 m/s east
9
Velocity You walk to your friends house which is to the west of your house and 800 m away. It takes you 5 minutes to get there. What is your velocity? You walk to your friends house which is to the west of your house and 800 m away. It takes you 5 minutes to get there. What is your velocity? v=d/t v=d/t v= 160 m/min west v= 160 m/min west
10
Velocity You go on a family road trip to Baker City, Oregon. It is 496 km away. Your dad drives slow. His average velocity is 70 km/hr east. How long is it going to take to get there? You go on a family road trip to Baker City, Oregon. It is 496 km away. Your dad drives slow. His average velocity is 70 km/hr east. How long is it going to take to get there? t=d/v t=d/v t= 7 hours t= 7 hours
